If you have filled up your vehicle in India recently, you have used E20. As of April 2026, the petrol sold across the country is a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol, meeting a minimum octane rating of RON 95. E20 is no longer a pilot or a premium option. It is the standard.
For most drivers the change is invisible, but it is worth understanding what the number means, why it exists, and what the common questions about mileage and older vehicles actually add up to.
The E in E20 stands for ethanol, and the number is the percentage by volume. E20 is 20% ethanol blended into petrol. Earlier stages of the programme used E10, a 10% blend, and the jump to E20 is the milestone India reached in 2025-26, five years ahead of the original schedule.
Ethanol raises the octane number of the fuel and adds oxygen, which helps petrol burn more completely. That is why E20 is specified alongside a minimum RON of 95.
This is the question most drivers ask, and the honest answer is that the effect is small for the vast majority of vehicles. Newer vehicles are built E20-ready. For older vehicles designed around E10, manufacturers and testing agencies have reviewed service data across crores of vehicles and reported no pattern of E20-related damage.
On mileage there is a modest reduction, because ethanol carries slightly less energy per litre than petrol. In practical terms, a vehicle returning around 20 kilometres per litre may see a drop of roughly half a kilometre, an effect that driving style and maintenance influence far more than fuel type.
In other words, the blend in your tank is doing quiet work for energy security, the rural economy and the climate at the same time.
E20 is a baseline, not a ceiling. Standards and excise relief now extend to higher blends, and regulators have begun recognising flex-fuel vehicles capable of running on E85 or near-pure E100. The first E85 retail outlets have started to appear.
How quickly India climbs beyond E20 will depend on the spread of flex-fuel vehicles and on periodic review, but the groundwork for a higher-ethanol future is being laid now.
